A hot rod shop builds or modifies early and classic American cars for performance and style: traditional roadsters and coupes, gassers, street rods, Tri-Five Chevrolets and pro-touring cars. This national shortlist includes businesses whose own sites or independent coverage document hot rod and custom-car work and that invite customer projects. No state has more than two, so use the state links below for wider local searches.
Each listing's sources were re-checked on October 19, 2026. None of these shops publishes fixed build prices. Foose Design takes builds by waiting-list application and bills monthly against deposits, and Nostalgia Hot Rods' quote form asks for a budget band, from up to $50,000 to $251,000–$750,000. Treat those as intake categories, not price evidence, and confirm current availability directly.
A turnkey hot rod or street rod
Shops such as Rad Rides, CAL Automotive and BBT document complete customer cars from chassis to paint. Ask which parts of the car are built in-house and which come from named chassis, engine and upholstery partners.
A model-specific program
American Gasser sells Willys gasser chassis and body packages, and Woody's Hot Rodz builds Tri-Five Chevrolets with new steel bodies. Confirm the eligible years and what the package includes before you source a donor.
Work on a car you already own
If you need only paint, upholstery, a chassis swap or a finishing job, compare shops by that service. Count's Kustoms, for example, invites customer cars for paint, upholstery, graphics and audio rather than documenting complete customer builds.
